Thaumatophyllum stenolobum ‘Variegated’
actual plant in photograph is what you recieve
Once classified within Philodendron, Thaumatophyllum stenolobum belongs to a group of large, tropical plants native to South America that are known for dramatic foliage and architectural growth. The species name stenolobum means “narrow-lobed,” referring to its elongated, deeply cut leaf segments. The variegated form elevates an already striking species with unpredictable marbling and sectoral coloration that makes every plant unique.
• Large, deeply divided foliage with narrow, elongated lobes creating a tropical, sculptural appearance
• Variegation appears as creamy white, mint, yellow, or marbled patterns depending on the individual plant
• Mature plants develop an impressive, tree-like self-heading growth habit with thick stems over time
• New leaves often emerge with shifting patterns, making each unfurling leaf highly anticipated
• Displays a bold, architectural form that works as a statement specimen indoors or in protected outdoor climates
• Faster growing than many highly variegated aroids once established, especially in warm conditions
• Rare in cultivation and highly sought after among collectors of unusual self-heading aroids
Care Tips
Light: Bright indirect light is ideal. Increased light supports stronger variegation and growth, but avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun that may scorch lighter sectors.
Water: Water when the upper portion of the substrate begins drying. Prefers evenly moist but airy conditions rather than remaining wet.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity (60%+ preferred), though mature plants adapt surprisingly well to average household conditions.
Temperature: Thrives between 65–85°F. Protect from temperatures below 55°F.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with ingredients such as bark, pumice, perlite, coco chips, or similar components. Strong root oxygenation supports best growth.
Feeding: Benefits from regular feeding during active growth. A balanced fertilizer with slightly elevated potassium works well for large foliage development—your Patrick’s Plants Aroid Formula (5-4-6) would fit this growth style nicely.
Growth Note: Because this is a self-heading species, mature specimens become substantial plants. Give it room—over time it develops into a dramatic specimen that can become a centerpiece rather than just another shelf plant.
